Castro Point, Florida, an oil painting of two boats moored beside a weathered boathouse. Taking a breather in the booth at the Granby Artists 25th Anniversary Showcase.

The best moment of my day at Holcomb Farm had nothing to do with painting. My son and daughter-in-law walked into the tent carrying my one-year-old grandson, and the rest of my family showed up as well. Getting to share the day with all of them is what I’ll remember most.

On Sunday, October 4, Granby Artists marked its 25th anniversary with a showcase and celebration at the farm, and more than 60 of us, current and past members, came out to show our work. There was painting, pottery, glass, woodworking, photography, fiber arts and more. It seemed the whole town turned out. Between the hands-on activities and the demonstrations, everyone had a good time, and the kids most of all.

My girlfriend Karen helped me run the booth, and I couldn’t have done it without her. We set it up like a gallery show, with gilded frames on deep burgundy panels. I brought a cross-section of what I’ve been painting: lighthouses, shrimp boats and sailboats in the harbor, a red-rock desert, a winter woods under fresh snow, a farmstead with its old silos, a floral still life, and a tall ship under full sail. The afternoon light came in through the arched window behind our table and made the whole space glow.

Most of what I paint comes from being outdoors. That’s where I’ve always been happiest, and it’s been the heart of my work since I picked up a brush again at Christmas 2017, more than 40 years after I put art aside as a teenager.

Thank you to Granby Artists for 25 years of bringing artists and this community together. And thank you to everyone who stopped by to look, ask questions, and talk about painting.

Commissions: I take commissions for portraits, landscapes, seascapes, animals and still lifes. If you have something in mind, I’d love to hear about it.
